ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL IS YET ANOTHER FAMOUS SCOT.

ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL IS YET ANOTHER FAMOUS SCOT.

ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL IS YET ANOTHER FAMOUS SCOT who is well known for the invention of the telephone, but he should also be remembered for his work in aeronautics and hydrofoils.
Born in Edinburgh in 1847 he was also one of the founder members of the "National Geographic Society".
He died in Canada in 1922 and the cause was pernicious anemia, a crippling illness which in some cases cause the oxygen not to form in the brain properly and causes the sufferer to have a type of dementia and in today's lifestyle would be treatable with vitamin B complex injections.
ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL is yet another scots born inventors who changed the world with the invention of the telephone yet he refused to have one where he worked calling it an intrusion, we all know that feeling!
This is a continuation on the "Great Scottish Inventors", who changed the world for ever highlighting the importance of the "Homecoming Scotland 2009 celebrations".

SCOTLANDS INVENTORS REMEMBERED.

SCOTLANDS INVENTORS REMEMBERED.

SCOTLANDS INVENTORS REMEMBERED will be a tribute in part to some of those great Scottish minds who in one way or another helped to develope the multi-talented Scottish nation.
Oldmeldrum Academy is where my grandson gets taught and thanks to the Oldmeldrum Academy the children there are being taught the importance of our Scottish heritage which includes past and present Scottish born inventors and the way Scots inventors have changed our world. A big thanks to my grandson for todays report on probably one of the most important inventions of all time;
****
ie; the television.
In February 1924 an inventor from Scotland called John Logie Baird made a TV that could have images of silhouettes!
On October the 2nd, 1925 the same person invented a TV that could have moving images!
The quality of the images wasn’t very good and you couldn’t even see the expression on a persons face!
In his laboratory he managed to make the first moving image!
The image was of a ventriloquists dummy's head!
As soon as he managed to get the dummy's head on the T.V. he ran downstairs and got an office worker
called William Edward Taynton and put him on T.V. and that means he was the first person ever to be on T.V.
He only managed to get 30 lines resolution and 5 pictures per second.
Scotsman John Logie Baird changed the world with the invention of the T.V.
In the lead up to the Homecoming Scotland 2009 celebrations we feel it only right to remind those who will visit Scotland over the 2009 events that the Scots are gifted inventors as our history proves.

ROBERT BURNS - "TO A HAGGIS".

ROBERT BURNS - "TO A HAGGIS".

ROBERT BURNS - "TO A HAGGIS", is recited every year all over the world.
This poem, written in the house of Mr Andrew Bruce, Castle Hill Edinburgh, where a haggis one day made part of the dinner.
TO A HAGGIS.
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm;
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While through your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic labour dight,
And cut you up wi' ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin,rich!

Then horn for horn they stretch and strive,
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve,
Are bent like drums;
Then auld guidman, maist like to ryve,
Bethankit hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that would staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi' perfect scunner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view,
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip lash,
His nieve a nit;
Through bloody flood or field to dash,
O how infit!

But mark the rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll mak it whissle;
And legs, and arms, and heads will sned,
Like taps o' thrissle.

Ye Pow'rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' pray'r,
Gie her a Haggis!

Mail invite for Scots-Americans

A drive to attract visitors to Scotland from North America has been launched.

It was made possible by a change to the US census rules, which makes it easier to identify people who believe they are of Scottish descent.

Almost 140,000 households in the United States and Canada will receive a mailshot from VisitScotland.

Enterprise Minister Jim Mather launched the promotion during a visit to Chicago, home of America's oldest St Andrews Society.

TRANQUILITY WILD WEST TOWN.

TRANQUILITY WILD WEST TOWN.

TRANQUILITY WILD WEST TOWN is thousands of miles away from the prairies nestled in a beautiful area of the North East Scotland.
Yesterday was one of their popular open days which had families out for their Sunday drive visiting as well as others who had penciled in their day out especially to see the cowboys and cowgirls in action.
Tranquility is so well named being in the heart of one of the best nature areas less than a mile south of the well known Glen Dronach Distillery which sits just off the B9001 at Drumblair Forgue near Huntly in Aberdeenshire.
In discussion with a few of the cowboys and talking to Alistair on whos ground the Jail, the Saloon, The Church & Court, General Store, Bank and Undertakers are all built he told me this was the only Wild West Re-enactment Group in Scotland, reminding us to remember many Scottish bloodlines started the Wild West as we all know it.
During the days activities the cowboys were great with the kids tutoring them on all the Health and Safety aspects of handling even these replica guns which could only fire loud blanks.
Lots of hard work was obvious on the work these guys and gals had put into Tranquility and although they are well known in them Eastern Parts, they will perform their Re-enactment for Open Days, Shows etc..
Yesterdays show was so popular it attracted attention from BBC Scotland and Radio 106 from the local area network.
The cost yesterday was nothing and for this nothing refreshments and food was available which most visitors appreciated, there was of course the donations box next to the general store.
You come away from Tranquility and it's quiet and peaceful setting thinking these cowboys and cowgirls have put in years of hard work and you know it has paid off just listening to the kids talking about how cool a place Tranquility is and asking so many questions you know you just have to go back next time.
Is it news to you ? then you read it here first!

Another report from the BBC.
With excellent shows like this Homecoming Scotland 2009 is set for an exceptional year.

BBC ALBA GAELIC GOLD.

BBC ALBA GAELIC GOLD.

BBC ALBA GAELIC GOLD refreshing broadcasts aired from 9 pm last night.
The long awaited Scottish home grown channel looked very good with some excellent singers with a mix of heritage and tradition for the opening night on freesat. We are told by the BBC it will be two years before it surfaces on Freeview which is a great pity.
We say this is a great pity as this channel has been needed for many years to educate the British public exactly what the Gaelic means to those who make the effort to learn their "Mither Tongue".
Students learning Gaelic could do a lot worse than viewing the new channel and a freesat box comes at a lower cost than expensive lessons.
We are happy that "Home Grown" channels from around the country are coming up on freesat and we can expect the Irish equivalent next year to join the Welsh and Scottish "Home Grown", channels.
Over the next eight to ten weeks, freesat channels will swell in number making a freesat set top box an excellent buy with no headache of paying monthly subscriptions.
Freesat boxes will also receive many updates to accommodate these new channels and hopefully at the same time iron out any little receiver niggles one can expect from a brand new product of this type.
This is a very important milestone in the history of Scottish TV and in the year before the Homecoming Scotland 2009 festival it will be well remembered exactly when it started.
